Hit Predict Corner
New predictions...
- 14-08-00: Bon Jovi - Say It Ain't So -
Sporting a riff more familiar when done by more modern
rockbands, like Blink 182, this one mixes a ballad-like
chorus, proving their worth despite their age, though
more by rep than by real merit.
- 01-08-00: Jessica Simpson - I Think I'm In
Love - While this song is a sure hit, I won't have part
of this. It's almost a literal copy of one of Mariah
Carey's first hits. On a more funny note, Mariah is doing
exactly the same right now, exactly copying a previous
Phil Collins hit.
- 01-08-00: Ronan Keating - Life is a
Rollercoaster - Penned and produced by former
one-man-group The New Radicals, Greg Alexander, it's a
infectious but not too smartly written song. Still, it
continues to show who's the most popular Boyzone member.
- 01-08-00: Craig David - Fill Me In - One
of those R&B that sounds good, but is actually like
all other songs before it. Apparently, repeating another
hit is a valid method of scoring a hit.
- 01-08-00: Joe - I Wanna Know - One
of those occasional sleeper hits. Sounds good, but you
didn't know it was quite that good until you actually
start to listen to it.
- 01-08-00: Janet Jackson - Doesn't Really
Matter - Filling most of the soundtrack of the movie
she's currently starring, this title song sounds
refreshing at first. It might become repetitive after a
short while, but at least she's back behind the mic.
- 01-06-00: Montell Jordan - Once Upon a Time - Not a topper musical-wise, but it has quite
an entertaining story in it.
- 01-05-00: Aaliyah - Try Again - Not
only showing us she's still in the R&B game, but also
showing she has more up her sleave, bringing her
movie-boy-friend Jet Li ("Romeo Must Die")
along the way to promote the movie.
- 01-05-00: Pink - There You Go - Another newbie in the
scene enjoying the same well produced R&B with an
attitude. One problem though, I wonder what her next name
will be if her pink hairdye wears out ?
- 01-05-00: Mary Mary - Praise You -
The current charts are filled with ladies doing some fast
R&B, and so does this duo with a nice sing-along
happy song.
- 01-04-00: Sisqo - Thong Song - While being away from
Dru Hill for a while, this song is still recognizable
from the same direction. Combine this fast paced R&B
style with an outrageous (funny, or at least, that's what
I think of it) theme, and you have a hit again, without
having to split all that dough with your other partners.
- 01-04-00: Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough - After her bankrupcy, she must've thought it
was time for some solid hits again, so this song follows
the current trend (set by the likes of Destiny's Child),
and voila, a hit.
- 01-03-00: Blink182 - All the Small Things - Just another one of those loose laid back
happy rocking kinda song.
- 01-03-00: Madonna - American Pie -
Continuing her retro style, the one she started a while
back with the Austin Powers II soundtrack, this is a
cover put in a nice and new beat. Starring in the movie
"The Next Big Thing" wasn't enough, so she had
to put a few songs (of which this is one) on the
soundtrack too.
- 01-02-00: All Saints - Pure Shores - Lucky
to be chosen to feature the title song of the soundtrack
of "The Beach", this song is from the hand of
the latest producer of Madonna, mr. Orbit, hence, a nice
beat, not so nice lyrics, and not so nice voices.
- 17-11-99: Will Smith (feat. Tatyana Ali & MC Lyte)-
Who Am I ? - Yes, you saw it
clearly, I skipped his new single "Will 2K"
feat. K-Ci, but I did that on purpose, since it's nothing
that special. So, I'm predicting his next single (again,
so I can prove my amazing predicting powers).
- 15-11-99: Celine Dion - That's the Way It Is - While her announcement to retire (for a few
years?) after 31st December still stands, she keeps her
fans satisfied as long as possible, with the releases of
a French album (a few months ago) and a new Best of...
with additional new songs ("All the Way" this
month). Also coming up is an in-depth-all-revealing
(auto)biography also titles "All the Way".
- 01-10-99: R. Kelly - If I Could Turn Back the Hands of
Time - R. Kelly trying his luck
with some old 60-ties style soul-ballad, accompanied with
a high-budget special effects filled clip, with some
inventive and impressive backwards filmed footage.
- 29-09-99: Tina Turner - When the Heartache is Over - She's back, still going strong at almost 60
years of age. This song is produced by the guys who did
Cher's latest album Believe, and it shows, they're
running out of imagination and computer sounds. Still,
Tina can carry any song, any time.
- 31-07-99: 702 - Where My Girls At ?
- No idea what this song means, but it kinda sounds good,
and they make a nice TLC-clone (oops, I don't think
they'd wanna hear that).
- 18-07-99: TLC - Unpretty - Second single already, again, having that
distinct TLC sound. Still, one can't help to notice the
acoustic guitar pinging away in the background, the same
guitar that crept into those boybands' music trying to
breath new life into their boring monotonous sounds.
- 18-07-99: K-CI & Jojo - Tell Me It's Real - As I predicted, who need
Jodeci when you can do it on your own ? This song is
kinda like all the others, nothing special, but will make
a hit nonetheless.
- 22-06-99: Cher - All or Nothing -
Her third single from her techno-pop come-back CD
"Believe". Still the same distinct sound, and
bit more mellow, but definitely still the same
dancibility.
- 09-06-99: New Radicals - Someday We'll Know - 2nd single of this
one-guy-formation-with-plural-name, vocally not perfect,
but lyrically totally okay.
- 25-05-99: Will Smith- Wild Wild West -
His status as movie star with blockbusters opening on
Independence Day has ensured his involvement in the
soundtrack of his latest movie to be opened yet again on
that day, "Wild Wild West". While the song
itself isn't really that catchy, his status (again) also
ensured a very big budget stylish clip, along with a
bunch of cameo appearances in it.
- 25-05-99: Madonna - Beautiful Stranger - Preparing for the summer movies blockbusters,
this song is from the "Austin Powers: The Spy Who
Shagged Me" soundtrack, and really has the funky
groovy retro feeling of the timeperiod of the movie. The
clip features Mike Myers as his outrageous hilarious
Austin Powers character, doin' stuff with Madonna.
- 25-05-99: Whitney Houston - My Love is You Love - Hey, she got her afro hairdo back. Cool.
- 22-03-99: Bon Jovi - Real Life -
Still not convinced it's the month of the come-back eh ?
Well, here's another one.
- 22-03-99: Blackstreet feat. Janet Jackson -
Boyfriend/Girlfriend - Pretty
monotonous song for a come-back.
- 22-03-99: Genuwine - Same ol' G -
This song isn't really special, but it's good enough to
make a come-back with.
- 20-03-99: The Cranberries - Promises
- Not enough come-backs this month ? Well, here's
another.
- 17-03-99: TLC - No Scrubs - And yet
another come-back, and they show they haven't lost their
touch/beat yet. After a financial dip (bankrupcy, after
selling 10+ million CD's, there's some logic) they can
finally start filling their pockets with money (I hope).
- 17-03-99: George Michael & Mary J. Blige - As - Making a very odd couple, this actually works
pretty well in this gospellish kinda song (originally by
Stevie Wonder). Nicely choreographed videoclip too (50+
Georges and Mary's sitting, dancing and chatting in a
room).
- 16-03-99: Blondy - Maria - And if
you think Cher was old, try this one. Again, age isn't
everything. I feel a whole 80-ies revival coming.
- 16-03-99: Cher - Strong Enough -
Conquering the world again, she shows age isn't an issue.
- 16-03-99: Roxette - Wish I Could Fly - The
oh so standard always sounding the same band has
returned, which was totally unnecassary if you'd ask me
(but you didn't).
- 15-03-99: Whitney Houston - It's Not Right, But It's Okay - Noticably the same writer as Monica &
Brandy's The Boy Is Mine, and a very bad copy at that
too.
- 15-03-99: Brandy - Have You Ever - A
very standard uninspirational sweet R&B song that
just isn't really special.
- 15-03-99: Monica - Angel Of Mine -
Another uninspirational move, this was originally
released by the late Eternal (much better version).
- 20-02-99: New Radicals - You Get What You Give - Dunno why, is just sounds nice and and funky
and happy, and we must have those once in a while. Dunno
why it's New Radicals as in plural either, coz I think
it's just one guy.
- 20-02-99: Madonna - Nothing Really Matters - Her 15th single for her album ? Anyway,
sounds nice, keep'm coming. I guess her album isn't that
bad after all.
- 02-02-99: Jennifer Paige - Sober -
This time, a more mainstream sound, (tending towards a
Paula Cole song), but still containing her
strange-sticking-in-your-head sound.
- 01-02-99: Chef - Chocalate Salty Balls - Isaac Hayes as the "South Park"
character Chef. Don't think about the lyrics too much,
it'll do strange things to your mind. Or is it just me ?
- 20-01-99: 2Pac - Changes - A few
more from this guy, and he released more singles after
his death, than he did before he died. You gotta admire
him, he accomplished so much, for a dead guy (that's
sarcasm, indeed, I think he's actually partying big time
somewhere underground right now). This one is another
cover, from Bruce uhmm, something, and it sounds nice.
- 01-01-99: Prince - 1999 - Smart guy, he
knew 17 years ago this song would be re-released, whether
his name was still Prince, The Symbol, The Artist
Formerly Known As Prince, TAFKAP or The Artist. Smarter
than the guy who made "In the Year 2525".
- 30-12-98: Jennifer Love Hewitt - How Do I Deal - Besides being a great actress (Party of Five,
I Know/ I Still Know/ I'll Always Know What You Did Last
Summer), she's already released two albums (or more, I'm
not sure, because they're Japan only releases) and this
one's finally getting more attention (it's on the "I
Still Know What You Did Last Summer" Soundtrack)
than just in Japan. Granted, she's not a pro, but it's a
well written and produced song that could make a hit if
it gets lots of airplay.
- 21-12-98: Faith Hill - This Kiss -
Country styled music is gaining more territory lately
(Shania Twain, Leann Rimes, and our own Ilse De Lange,
and others). Of course, only the special ones, with a
distinct good sound make it over here (you won't see any
Garth Brooks or Willie Nelson albums being sold here).
- 21-12-98: Jessica - How Will I Know (Who You Are) - Another part of the current Swedish Invasion
Task Force (see the critic section, and
earlier this year is was Eagle-Eye Cherry and Solid
Harmonie, and a Ace of Base come-back). After a sucky
first single, her second song shows improvement, so much,
that I actually like it.
- 14-12-98: Ilse DeLange - I'd Be Yours
- Her third single (a fairly succesful debut "Not so
Tough" and a somewhat boring "World of
Hurt"), she mixes old style country with her own
twist to create a somewhat more accessible
country-pop-swinging kinda sound. A native Dutch woman,
she was born with a typical yet extraordinary voice, grew
up with music, and being discovered by an American
producer was unavoidable. After signing with Warner, she
recorded her album in Nashville (where else ?), and
she'll start a US promotion tour this January. Don't say
I didn't warn ya.
- 14-12-98: Bryan Adams & Mel C - When You're Gone - This song would've been really great, if I
could just remove Mel C's voice, 'cause you have to
admit, she really can't sing. Pop quiz, hot shot: On
which (left or right) channel is Bryan singing ? (You
_do_ listen to you music in stereo, don't you ?)
- 14-12-98: Will Smith - Miami - Bad choice
to release this song over here. While he sings about
Miami, sun, heat, party and stuff, we only have rain,
clouds, cold, storm and more stuff like that.
- Nov '98: Well, it's November, definitely a
month to release CD's and singles. Look at these new
highly anticipated releases, Alanis Morissette (it's
been over 2 years), Whitney
Houston (it's been over 8 years !),
Celine Dion (3rd album in less than 2 months), after the
Fugees' Wyclef and Lauren Hill, Pras is the last to
release a solo album, George Michael, R.E.M., Seal,
Jewel, Cher. And I didn't even mention the "Best
of" CD's released this month, U2, Dire
Straits, Phil Collins, En Vogue, Bruce Springsteen, Julio
Iglesias, Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey, Duran Duran,
Meat Loaf, 2 Pac (plus a new one with Notorious B.I.G.,
and for both men who are supposed to be dead, they're
quit busy, don't you think ?). Did I mention live albums
? Hanson, Eros Ramazzotti, The Rolling Stones, Pearl
Jam. What about collaborations, like, Jay-Z with JD, or
JD with Mariah Carey (Sweetheart), or Mariah
Carey with Whitney Houston (When You Believe). Topping
this November is R. Kelly, with his 3 most recent singles
barely off the charts ("Be Careful", with
Sparkle, "Friend
of Mine" with Kelly Price, and
his own "Half
On A Baby"), he's releasing a
double album, and for single releases collaborating with
Keith Murray (Home
Alone), Celine Dion (You Are My Angel), and Kirk Franklin with Bono, Mary J. Blige
and others (Lean on
Me). (What do you mean, he's been
busy ? {:) ) So, if you can't make up your mind this
month, it means there's something wrong with you, go see
a shrink.
- 30-10-98: Dru Hill - How Deep Is Your Love - From the "Rush Hour" soundtrack,
unlike most R&B lately, this song has a good beat and
a good melody.
- 30-10-98: Cher - Believe - She's
only 25 (I think {:) ), and already has this huge career,
after being a singer, a moviestar, a surgical test
object, she's back to singing again. I say, let's have a
few decades more of her.
- 30-10-98: Jewel - Hands - While all
of her songs have _something_ appealing, it didn't do the
trick just yet (make me run to the store, using money to
obtain her music)
- 30-10-98: Des'ree - What's Your Sign ? - Sounds a bit too familiar to her hit single
"Life", but it makes your feet move and makes
you mummble along, so it can't be bad, right ?
- 30-10-98: Vengaboys - Boom Boom Boom Boom !!! - Who'd thought I'd actually like one of their
oh so simple songs. Anyway, this one has a really
infectious melody.
- 29-10-98: Madonna - The Power of Goodbye - And another surprise. While her singles from
her new album were really crappy (either too boring or
too hyper), I think I actually like this one. It's quite
beautiful actually.
- 29-10-98: Aqua - Good Morning Sunshine - While I was disgusted by their debut single,
this is the second time I'm surprised by their song. They
show more versatility than I first would've guessed.
Though, they could've left the very really bad rapping
part out.
- 29-10-98: Roméo feat. Gwen Dicky - Flying - Another hit by these guys from (in case
you've forgotten) Rotterdam.
- 16-10-98: Queen & Wyclef Jean feat.
Pras - Another one bites the dust - An oldy by Queen with
the usual Wyclef touch added to it. Most fun is the
videoclip though.
- 02-10-98: Celine Dion & R Kelly - I'm Your Angel - This song will be featured on both their new
upcoming albums, and even though no one in this world has
heard it, I predict it will make a hit. And hence, I
prove my mighty accurately predicting powers once more.
- 02-10-98: Celine Dion - Zora Sourit - A
bit too enthusiastic synthesizer beat, making it a bit
out of tune, but otherwise nice, as you might expect from
her. Once again, I have absolutely no idea what she's
singing about. (Result of that "F(ailed)" I got
for French way back in high school)
- 02-10-98: Monica - The First Night -
"I wanna get down, but not the first night".
Well, that's because she's never met me eh ? {:)
- 24-09-98: Alanis Morissette - Thank You - No no, thank YOU, for making another fine
fine song. Weeeew. It's been a while eh ?
- 11-09-98: Jennifer Paige - Crush -
Recommended by my sister, this song has an alternative
retro feeling, and keeps lingering in your head (positive
or negative aside).
- 29-08-98: LL Cool J - Hot, Hot, Hot
- Another master in using samples (this time an old
Terence Trent D'Arby).
- 29-08-98: Savage Garden - To the Moon and Back - Just as their hit before, this one will sneak
in the charts slowly.
- 08-08-98: Jay-Z feat. Blackstreet - The City is Mine - Due to lack of new songs, I'd have to go for
this one. Catchy tune (sounds familiar, stolen ? Another
cover maybe ?), a good beat, and a clip that's definitely
been stolen/covered from "The Usual Suspects"
movie. The role of Blackstreet in this song is scarely
limited. Maybe they are /at the end of/trying to boost/
their career ?
- 30-07-98: K-CI & Jojo - Don't Rush (Take Love Slowly) - While the other half of Jodeci is probably
still sitting out jailtime, the brothers K-Ci & Jojo
prove they can do very well without them.
- 30-07-98: Des'ree - Life - This is
her come-back (I didn't know she left, I didn't even know
she was ever there ?). A nice come-back I might say. The
"DooDoo do Doo" part is a bit corny though.
- 07-07-98: Aerosmith - I don't Want to Miss a Thing - Title song of the movie
"Armageddon", this song is in the best
tradition of an Aerosmith song. A hit definitely. Though,
the choice of Aerosmith doing the title song seems a bit
biased. (Liv Tyler plays in movie, Daddy does the music.
What is family for, hmm?)
- 24-06-98: Will Smith - Just the Two of Us - While Will Smith's old record company is
attacking Europe (with DJ Jazzy Jeff, the single
"Lovely Daze", and their "Greatest
Hits" album), Will Smith is continuing with his new
stuff in the States, releasing another oldy with his own
twist. Again. But hey, he started this hype years ago
(yes, before a certain Puff Daddy did), so, he might as
well continue it. This song is about his son. I think.
Cute.
- 22-06-98: Romeo - Secret Love - This
is the third single from their album, and will make a big
hit just like "Coming Home" did. Did I mention
they were from Rotterdam ? *sigh, several times*. Latest
news points in the direction that they scored a contract
with BMG, covering a release of their material for over
30 countries. Don't say I didn't warn ya. They need a new
director for their clips though, it's needs a fresher
faster more professional look. Well, it looks
professional, it just doesn't look big.
- 22-06-98: Eagle-Eye Cherry - Falling in Love again - Going on a winning streak, this one will make
a hit for sure. Setting himself apart with his own type
of music, he also sets a trend of having good produced
lighthearted clips.
- 22-06-98: Next - Too Close - This
one is a slow prediction. Sorry, it took time to figure
out the tune, okay ?
- 22-06-98: Public Enemy - He Got Game
- AAAAAAAAAAAAAH, ANOTHER OLDY in a new coat, ON a
soundtrack. Must be a hype, it will pass.
- 22-06-98: Pras feat. Ol' Dirty Bastard and Mya - Ghetto
Supastar - Another oldy in a new
coat, and on the "Bulworth" soundtrack. If you
can't figure out the old sample, it's an Bee Gees oldy.
Nice clip with movie and music performers parts really
mixed together. Question: How do you insult a guy whose
name is Ol' Dirty Bastard ???
- 22-06-98: Solid HarmoniE - I Wanna Love you - The third hit in a row. Lyrics haven't grown
smarter, but hey, it sounds nice.
- 12-06-98: Aqua - Turn back time -
After their rush to fame, this is their first song to
make it on a soundtrack. Still the same as everything
before. The same computer music (tho' they did pull out a
whole new range of computer sounds), the same computer
enhanced voice (I know some of you may disagree, but I'm
sure about this, I have good ears). But this time a
different kinda clip. More mature and some nice graphics.
With pieces of the movie as well of course ("Sliding
Doors" with Gwyneth Paltrow).
- 11-06-98: Celine Dion feat. the Bee Gees - Immortality - This one will make a hit, insured by Celine
Dion's status as a super star (yeah, eat this Madonna.
For the ones among you who don't know it, Madonna doesn't
like her. Frankly, I think she's just freakin' jealous),
and famous grandpa's Bee Gees, who wrote this song, doing
their famous high pitched background vocals. Beautiful
song, but not great (does that make any sense ?).
- 11-06-98: Puff Daddy feat. Jimmy Page -
Come with me - This one's also a reworked old tune. But
that's normal, everything from Puff Daddy is a remix, he
must have a major lack of imagination. Though the old
tune is hard to figure out in this song, you'll know it
pretty soon. The new lyrics are downright pathetic. But
it never stopped Puff Daddy's songs from making a hit.
Also, this is one of the many to be released singles of
the Godzilla soundtrack. (Zilla, for the atheïsts, hehe)
- 11-06-98: DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Lovely
Daze - Another song using a sample
from an oldy. Must be a trend eh ? This one's released by
Will Smith's old record company. Probably also the reason
why he's not in the clip. But it does make a new fresher
kinda sorta clip.
- 11-06-98: Paula Cole - I don't Want to Wait - This one's an oldy (over 30 weeks, still in
the Billboards). I think it's featured on a soundtrack or
something. Anyway, seems like Samuel L. Jackson isn't
really fond of this song (as shown in a hilarious sketch
on the MTV Movie Awards '98). Strangely enough, though
the song's name and performer wasn't mentioned in it, I
knew what it was, and even downloaded it. Am I psychic or
what ? Nice tune (dodo doododoo, dodo doododoo, dodo
doododoooh). But it will wear of pretty soon. Tune will
hang in yer head for a while, even if the song isn't
really good. Not very good, but it does set itself apart.
- 06-06-98: Brandy & Monica - The Boy is Mine - Not really a prediction, coz it made #1 at
the US Billboards. Starts of with a new nice sounding
classical tune. But after a few minutes you can hear the
short pattern, and notice the monotone, and it will get
boring.
- 28-05-98: Billie Myers - Kiss the Rain -
Well, this has something, but it's not used to its full
potential, resulting in a very standard song. She has an
irritating voice too. Bugs me like hell.
- 28-05-98: Shania Twain - You're still the
One - Nice, but sounds like it's been done already, like
in the 80-ties.
- 28-05-98: been a slow week, but I have to
put something here, so, a few small not so sure
predictions...
- 15-05-98: Lionel Richie - Closest Thing to Heaven - He's back. Leaning a bit too much to
soul/R&B for my taste.
(strange, I have a LOT of covers
here. "Men in Black" and "Ray of
Light" are reworked oldies, "Torn" is
covered several times, "Say What you Want" was
released earlier without Method Man. Also
"Casanova" and "Under the Brigde" are
covers too. And finally, "Fire it Up/Turn it Up
(remix)" uses the theme of oldtimer TV series
"The Knight Rider". Must mean that covers make
hits ?)
- 15-05-98: Ultimate Kaos - Casanova -
Another boy band. Another. Nice chorus, but that's about
it. Fairly simple song and pretty simple lyrics.
- 14-05-98: 2 Pac - Do for Love -
First song with a clip NOT featuring him (well, he does,
as a cartoon). That's finally after being in 18 clips
AFTER his death. Right. He's dead. Whatever.
- 10-05-98: Nothing yet.
So, what did I predict earlier on ?
- Eagle-Eye Cherry - When
Mermaids Cry - I
downloaded it without knowing what it would be. Since I
could download it, it may be a sign it's his next single.
I think it'll make a hit.
- Texas feat. Method Man -
Say What you Want -
The original sounded good. This one has some pro and
cons.
- Busta Rhymes - Fire it
Up/Turn it Up (remix) - Strange. Brings back sweet memories eh ?
- Ace of Base - Life is a
Flower - Sounds the same as everything they released
before this "come-back". It pretty much sux,
but whole Europe has gone crazy waiting for it.
- Savage Garden - Truly
Madly Deeply - This
is the kind which sneaks in the charts and in yer head
very slowly.
- K-CI & Jojo - All my
Life - Has a nice ring. Lyrics aren't
the smartest things I've heard. And it's not the music
either. Then, it must be their voices.
- All Saints - Under the
Bridge - Worse than the original, but All Saints is hot
now, so.
- Romeo - Coming Home - nice R&B with some actual rythm, if
released throughout Europe I predict a big hit. Has been
on MTV's Top Selection several days too. Did I mention
they're from Rotterdam yet ? Well, they are.
- Eagle-Eye Cherry - Save
Tonight - Song sounds nice, got
good rythm, gonna make a big hit in Europe. Accompenied
with a very damn funny clip.
- Madonna - Ray of Light - sounds even
stranger, but people like it, I guess. Personally, it
sounds like a computer on tilt.
- Madonna - Frozen - Sounds strange.
- Celine Dion - My Heart
Will go on - Long before it became
a hit, I already knew. Trust me.
- Natalie Imbruglia - Torn - I saw it the minute I saw it. (Hunh ?). Okay,
I mean, I knew it the minute I saw it. Nice clip, very
refreshing. And the song, well, listen yourself.
- Will Smith - Men in Black - Definite a blockbuster, just like the movie.
What did I predict much much earlier ?
- Bruce Springsteen -
Streets of Philadelphia - I
could've predicted that it would win an Oscar. You just
should've asked.
